History

ÅRE’S FIRST HOTEL

The railway to Trondheim, which was officially opened by King Oscar II in 1882, saw the start of tourism in the area. Visitors came here to walk up Åreskutan and for the sake of the fresh air, giving them the name “luftgäster” (literally, “air guests”). At that time there were no hotels in Åre, and food was served in the Järnvägsrestaurangen (railway restaurant) that was run by Albin Wettergren.

A woman from southern Sweden who was working in Östersund, Kristina Hansson, saw the business potential of Åre. She borrowed money so she could build a hotel, one with a first class restaurant and lounge areas. This led to the construction of Åre’s first hotel, a beautiful white building in the Swiss style. It had 18 rooms and was given the name Åreskutan, opening with much grandeur in 1895.
